Solihull Sixth Form College

The Sixth Form College Solihull Basketball Academy is staging trials for places in the 2009/10 squad.

Taking place on April 15 2009 at 12.00 am – 2.00 pm at the College's Widney Manor Road campus, the trials will be run by Academy Head Coach Richard Parker, who is looking to recruit a team to build on this season's excellent achievements.

Playing in the England Basketball Under-18 South West Premier League for the first time, the Academy has finished the regular season joint top of their league and secured a play-off spot. Add to that a semi-final finish in the National Cup, a place in the quarter-finals of English Schools, and a place in the West Midlands Cup Final and it is clear what a high achieving academy it is.

The students participate in four two-hour squad practice sessions, two squad strength and conditioning sessions, comprehensive pre-season and half-term programmes, as well as individual sessions.

However, The Sixth Form College, Solihull Basketball Academy offers more than just high quality basketball. All the players in the Academy are full-time students at the College and this year as well as achieving on the court, the whole squad are set to achieve their expected grades or above. All of this year’s student athletes who want to go onto higher education have received offers. Indeed, every year more than 850 students gain university places and the College boasts impressive academic achievements, with above average pass rates.

Last year, the College boasted a 100% pass rate in 38 advanced level courses and all Level 2 courses. 479 students achieved all higher grades in their courses, of which 111 got three or more A grades at A Level or Double Distinctions at advanced vocational courses. In the last six years 74 students have progressed to Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Students who attend the College can choose from a wide range of subjects that many smaller institutions cannot offer. There are 45 subjects at A Level to choose from, including Business Studies, Law, Physical Education and a range of science and modern languages. Vocational courses are offered at Level 2 and Level 3 and there is the highly regarded International Baccalaureate Diploma.
