The 51st State

The 51st State

This weekend it's the turn of the NFL, but it isn't just American Football that has been in London recently.

The o2, formerly the the Millennium Dome is now a firmly established venue in the major US Sports leagues. US fans know Madison Square Garden and Soldier Field, but now the o2 has joined them.

The NHL was the first to visit London and the o2 when regular-season games were played in Europe for the first time when the Anaheim Ducks faced the LA Kings in London opening the 2007-08 campaign.

October saw the NBA game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Boston Celtics, also at the o2, though the NBA stopped short of playing a regular season game. Despite this the venue was a sell-out, with fans coming from all over Europe to see KG and Ray Allen make debuts for the Celtics.

This weekend the NFL will fill the new Wembley Stadium with a game between the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins.

London can look forward to more of the same in the future and it's not all one-way. With the new global ownership of Premier League football clubs, 3 NFL club owners now own Premier League teams. The future will surely see Premier League games played abroad, and the US is an obvious destination.
