Greenhouse Schools Project(Greenhouse) is a charitable organisation, which was founded in 2002 to help young people aged 11-16 from challenging backgrounds, access good quality sports training in the school holidays. Following a highly successful pilot in West London, Greenhouse has grown rapidly to meet the increasing demands for London’s young disengaged communities through sports and performing arts programmes. The charity has evolved over the past six years and now focuses on delivering over 50 high quality specialist programmes and out of school clubs, to young people across central London and in the Rhondda Valley in Wales.

Greenhouse employs a unique and pioneering model whereby sports and performing arts programmes are used as a tool to achieve its aims, operating both schools-based and community-focused programmes on a full time basis to ensure consistent, maximum engagement throughout the critical years of young people’s lives. Through the initiative, young people have the opportunity to receive sports coaching or performing arts teaching throughout the whole week, including weekends and in all school holidays. This predominately specialist coaching or teaching prepares young people for regular, progressive appropriate sporting competition pathways and live public performances for those pursuing performing arts.

As many schools no longer have the benefit of huge playing fields, Greenhouse focus on sports such as table tennis, basketball and street dance Drama is equally well suited to this approach and allows those taking part to explore issues relevant to their lives. In addition, special needs activities are also provided, enabling children living with a disability to engage in a range of sporting and drama therapy programmes.

The Dunlop Masters table tennis event will be screened live on Sky Sports One between 7.30 and 10.30pm. The broadcast will have a special slot dedicated to Greenhouse, featuring a special preview of extracts from new programme videos documenting the fantastic achievements of initiative’s work, as well as an exciting dance performance by a group of young people from the performing arts programme.
